SANCTUARY EQUIPS THE CHURCH
TO SUPPORT MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING
Sanctuary Mental Health Ministries is a Christian organization that was founded in 2012 for the purpose of equipping churches to make a difference in the lives of individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Today, Sanctuary remains committed to its founding mission: raising mental health awareness within faith communities and providing theologically-sound educational resources and training to promote mental wellbeing.
We believe there is a vital need for youth to be able to talk about mental health and receive support and companionship in their faith communities. Our youth resource is centred on the pressing questions that young people are asking about faith and mental health. It provides space to engage these questions and start important conversations in youth ministries and church communities. We hope to see local churches inspired and equipped to support youth with lived experience of mental health challenges.

One in four people will be experience a mental health challenge at some point in their lives. And half of all lifetime mental health conditions begin by age fourteen. Young people need early intervention to help them develop resilience and support systems, yet the stigma surrounding mental illnesses silences many and prevents faith communities from responding compassionately and effectively.
Our eight-session resource—designed for use in small groups at parishes or schools—explores the realities of mental health and illness, as well as the vital need for faith-based community conversations about these topics. The sessions are accompanied by compelling films that feature the stories of young Christians living with mental health challenges, along with the insights of church leaders, theologians, and psychologists.
